FastDNA® SPIN Kit for Soil
Isolation of DNA from soil organisms to assess microbial diversity and soil health

BIO 101 introduces a NEW kit for the study of microbial diversity of agricultural soils. The FastDNA® SPIN Kit for Soil is used in conjunction with the FastPrep® instrument to rapidly isolate and purify genomic DNA from soil organisms in only 30 minutes. Up to 12 samples can be processed in the FastPrep® instrument simultaneously for convenient screening of the genetic diversity in test samples. The kit is characterized by its simplicity in efficiency in extracting DNA up to 25 kb in length from all bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals in a soil community. Resulting DNA is PCR amplification ready.

A brief outline of the protocol:

  1. Add up to 500 mg of soil to the homogenization tube and add lysing reagents.
  2. Process in the FastPrep® Instrument and centrifuge tubes to pellet cellular debris and proteins.
  3. To supernatant, add DNA Binding Matrix and transfer entire solution to a SPIN Filter.
  4. Centrifuge SPIN Filter; wash DNA bound GLASSMILK® with wash solution; and elute the DNA in water.
  5. DNA is PCR ready.
